AthenaHQ alternative: what it costs and what it does not fix

If you are looking for an AthenaHQ alternative, the first thing to check is what you need the tool to do. AthenaHQ is a monitoring platform, and a good one by most accounts. But watching your brand appear in AI answers and fixing the site that causes the misses are two different jobs. This post lays out what AthenaHQ costs, what it covers, and where a different tool fits better.

What is AthenaHQ, and what does it do?

AthenaHQ is an AI visibility platform that tracks whether engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI answers mention your brand, which sources they cite, and how you compare with competitors. It also suggests content gaps. It is built for ongoing monitoring, not for generating site fixes.

An October 2026 review from Rankability (a competitor, so weigh it accordingly) says the company was founded by former Google Search and DeepMind engineers and is backed by Y Combinator. It describes a recommendation engine for content gaps, and says nothing about the product writing or applying the corrections.

How much does AthenaHQ cost?

AthenaHQ lists a free Essential plan, a Starter plan at $295 per month (17% off on annual billing), and custom Enterprise pricing. Usage is measured in credits, where one credit buys one AI response. Starter includes 3,600 credits a month. Extra credits and API access cost more on top.

Those figures come from AthenaHQ's own pricing page. One caution: the Rankability review says there is no free tier, while the pricing page says Essential is free. We trust the vendor's page for its own prices, but confirm before you budget, because plans change.

What does a credit actually buy?

A credit is one AI response, so the math depends on how many prompts and engines you track. Track 50 prompts across 4 engines and one check is 200 responses. At 3,600 credits, Starter covers about 18 of those runs per month, according to Rework's pricing analysis. That is roughly weekly checking, not daily.

Quick arithmetic of our own: $295 divided by 3,600 credits is about 8 cents per tracked response. That is a fair price for data. It is an expensive way to learn that your robots.txt blocks GPTBot.

Who should look for an AthenaHQ alternative?

Look elsewhere if you are a local or service business, a freelancer, or a small agency that mainly needs to know why AI skips your site. Monitoring answers "are we mentioned?" It does not answer "what is broken on our pages?" A $295 monthly subscription is hard to justify before the basics are in place.

Prompt tracking earns its cost once your site is readable and you want to measure movement against named competitors. Before that, you are paying to watch a score that has an obvious cause.

How is GeoRoar different from AthenaHQ?

GeoRoar audits the site itself. It fetches your public pages and scores them against a fixed 100-point rubric: crawler access, structured data, answerability, entity clarity, trust, and off-site presence. The audit is free and takes about 30 seconds. You see every check you pass or fail.

Then it fixes. The $99 Fix Pack (one-time) generates the corrections for the checks you fail, ready to paste in. Monitor is $19 a month and re-checks the site so a CMS update does not quietly undo the work. Done-for-you is $999 if you want someone else to do it.

What does GeoRoar not do?

GeoRoar does not track your brand across hundreds of prompts, measure sentiment, or show share of voice against competitors over time. AthenaHQ and similar tools do that, and they do it better than we would. GeoRoar also cannot promise a citation. No one can, because the engines are black boxes.

What a site owner can control is whether the site is readable, valid, and clearly about one thing. That is the part GeoRoar checks and repairs.

Should you use both?

Plenty of teams end up with both, in a set order. Run a free audit first and fix what fails, since those fixes are cheap and sit entirely in your control. Once the site passes, a tracker such as AthenaHQ tells you whether the engines noticed. The free Essential plan is a reasonable way to test that without committing $295.

If you serve clients, the same logic applies per client. Audit and fix first, then add monitoring for the accounts that have budget for it.
