A free AI visibility checker tells you whether ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity say your name. It does not tell you why they do or don't. If you only run one, you are working with half the picture.
What is a free AI visibility checker?
A free AI visibility checker asks AI platforms questions related to your brand, then counts how often your name appears in the answers. It measures output: mentions. It generally does not inspect your website, so it cannot explain a low result or point to a fix.
Ahrefs offers the best-known one. You type a brand name, and it runs search-style prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews, then checks whether each response names you (Ahrefs).
What does Ahrefs' free checker actually report?
The free report shows total AI mentions, mentions by platform, and the top 5 topics, cited domains, and cited pages tied to your brand. Ahrefs calls it "a limited preview" and "a one-time snapshot." Anything past the top 5 per section, plus history and competitor comparison, sits behind its paid Brand Radar product.
That is a fair trade for a free tool, and it is useful. The cited-domains list can show you which third-party sites AI engines lean on when they talk about you. If a directory or review site you never touched shows up there, that is worth knowing.
Is a mention the same as a citation?
No. A mention means the AI wrote your brand name. A citation means it linked to your site. The gap between them is large, and it changes what a visibility score is worth to you.
Ahrefs studied more than 31,000 brand mentions from a database of 150 million prompts, using its own brand. It found the brand was mentioned without a link 50 to 90 percent of the time, depending on the platform. Linked mentions ran from 10.7% in AI Overviews and 26.9% in ChatGPT up to 51.6% in Perplexity (Ahrefs study, November 2025). One caveat from the author: it covers a single brand, so your numbers will differ.
For a local business, the practical point is this. A mention can send someone to search your name. A citation can send them straight to your site. A checker that counts both as one "visibility" number hides which one you are missing.
What can't a free checker tell you?
It cannot show trends, benchmark you against competitors, or explain why AI does or doesn't cite your site. A one-time snapshot gives you a number with nothing to compare it to. One review of Ahrefs' tool says it "tells you nothing about why your site is or is not citable" (UD).
There is a second limit worth stating plainly. Prompt-based checkers sample answers. AI engines vary their responses from run to run, so a brand that shows up in 3 of 20 prompts today may show up in 5 tomorrow with no change on your end. Treat a single snapshot as a rough read, not a grade.
What should you check alongside it?
Check whether AI crawlers can reach your site, whether your pages answer real questions in plain text, and whether your structured data says what you are. Those are the things you control directly, and they are the likely reason for a low mention count.
A checker reads the output. An audit reads the cause. If the checker says AI never names your dental practice, the audit can tell you that your robots.txt blocks GPTBot, your schema says "Organization" instead of "Dentist", and your service pages have no answerable text. Those three problems are fixable this week.
This is where GeoRoar fits, and it is worth being clear about what it does not do. GeoRoar does not query ChatGPT to count your mentions. The free GeoRoar audit fetches your public pages and scores them against a fixed 100-point rubric, so you see exactly which checks pass and fail. The Fix Pack ($99, one-time) generates the corrected files. Monitor ($19 a month) re-checks as your site changes.
Which one should you run first?
Run the audit first if you have never looked at your site's AI readiness, and the checker first if you want a quick read on your brand's current reputation in AI answers. Most small businesses get more from the audit, because a missing fix is a clearer next step than a mention count.
If you serve clients as a freelancer or agency, run both. The checker gives you a talking point for the first call, and the audit gives you the work plan for the second.
Frequently asked questions
What is a free AI visibility checker?
A free AI visibility checker asks AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity questions related to your brand, then counts how often your name appears in the answers. It measures mentions. It usually does not inspect your website or explain why you are or are not named.
Is Ahrefs' free AI visibility checker accurate?
It is a one-time snapshot of sampled prompts, and AI answers vary from run to run. Ahrefs describes the free report as a limited preview, capped at the top 5 results per section. Treat it as a rough read of your brand's mentions, not a precise score.
What is the difference between an AI mention and an AI citation?
A mention means the AI wrote your brand name in its answer. A citation means it linked to your website. In an Ahrefs study of more than 31,000 brand mentions, the brand was mentioned without a link 50 to 90 percent of the time, depending on the platform.
