GEO is getting a lot of attention, and some agents are asking whether it replaces the SEO they already pay for. It does not. They are different jobs that happen to share a foundation.
The difference in one line
SEO is about ranking in Google's list of links. GEO is about being named inside an AI answer. A buyer who scrolls Google's results and a buyer who reads a single ChatGPT answer are two different moments, and you can win one while losing the other.
Why they overlap
The good news is that much of the groundwork serves both. Fast, crawlable pages, clear structure, content that answers real questions, and consistent profiles help you rank in Google and help an AI read and cite you. Practitioners who track both tend to find that strong organic SEO and AI citation move together rather than competing.
Where they diverge
GEO leans harder on structured data, plainly answered questions, and off-site trust signals, while classic SEO still cares about things like backlinks and keyword targeting. The gap matters most for agents whose sites rank fine on Google but were never built to be machine-readable, which describes a lot of template-built agent sites.
See the gap on your own site
GeoRoar's free audit measures the AI-specific layer: machine access, structured data, answerability, entity clarity, trust, and off-site corroboration. If you already invest in SEO, the audit shows which of those your current work covers and which it misses. Run it to see the gap.
