How do AI search engines choose which sources to cite?

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews all answer questions by pulling from outside sources. But they don't pick the same sources, or for the same reasons. Here's what the research actually shows.

What does "choosing a source" mean to an AI engine?

Most AI search tools use retrieval augmented generation, or RAG. Instead of answering purely from memory, the model searches an index, pulls back a handful of passages that seem relevant, and writes an answer grounded in those passages, with citations attached. It's closer to a student citing sources in a term paper than a search engine ranking pages by backlinks. The model isn't asking "which page is most authoritative," it's asking "which chunk of text best answers this specific question, in a form I can quote."

Do ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google all use the same criteria?

No, and this is where a lot of GEO advice goes wrong by treating "AI search" as one system.

Does ranking well on Google mean I'll get cited?

Not reliably, and the gap is bigger than most site owners expect. Ahrefs analyzed 15,000 queries and found that only around 12% of the URLs cited by AI tools also appear in Google's top 10 (Ahrefs, 2026). The other 88% come from pages that never crack page one. Traditional SEO and AI citation share some DNA, but they are separate games with separate scoreboards.

An analysis of over one million AI citations by Muck Rack found roughly 82 to 95% came from earned media, meaning coverage, reviews, and mentions you didn't write yourself, with around 94% coming from non-paid sources. AI models learned what counts as credible from their training data, which weighted independent, editorially reviewed sources over brand-owned pages, and that habit carries over into how they pick citations today.

Practically, that means a mention in a review site, a local directory, an industry publication, or an active Reddit thread can move the needle more than another paragraph on your homepage. Start by checking where you stand instead of guessing.
