How to show up in ChatGPT local recommendations

Ranking third in Google's map pack does not put you in ChatGPT's answer. The two read different sources, and most local businesses have only tuned for one of them. Here is what the data says about the other one.

How does ChatGPT choose which local businesses to recommend?

ChatGPT pulls from a mix of sources and does not use a single ranking list. In BrightLocal's study of roughly 200,000 local AI searches, business websites made up 42% of all citations, Google Business Profile 28.6%, and Yelp 9.5%. Your own site matters more than any directory.

That study (BrightLocal, September 16, 2026) covered ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews together, and counted about 1.97 million citations. Of the unique domains cited, 93% were business sites. An earlier BrightLocal test of ChatGPT alone found it used business websites as a source 58% of the time. That one ran 20 searches across 10 niches, so treat it as a signal, not a law.

Does my Google Business Profile matter for ChatGPT?

Less than you would think. BrightLocal found that ChatGPT rarely uses Google Business Profile, while Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews rely on it heavily. ChatGPT overlaps with Google's local results only about 19 to 20% of the time, so a strong map-pack position does not carry over.

Keep the profile accurate anyway. Google's AI features lean on it, and it is free. Just do not assume it is your ChatGPT strategy. If your whole local plan is the profile and reviews on Google, ChatGPT may be working from a different picture of your business than the one you built.

What did the Yelp and OpenAI deal change?

On July 23, 2026, Yelp said it is licensing reviews, ratings, photos, and business data to OpenAI, so ChatGPT can show them for local queries. Yelp also plans a Request a Quote feature inside ChatGPT. Financial terms were not disclosed. How much it shifts recommendations is still unmeasured.

Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman told Axios, "If you want to answer local queries, you really need Yelp" (Axios, Search Engine Land). That is a licensor talking about its own product, so weigh it accordingly. Yelp was already 9.5% of local citations before the deal. If you have a dental practice, we wrote a more specific version in Yelp reviews in ChatGPT for dentists.

What should a local business fix first?

Fix your own website first, since it supplies the largest share of citations. Put your services, price ranges, hours, address, and service area in plain text on pages a crawler can read, then match those details exactly on Yelp, Google, and Facebook. Mismatches give the model a reason to skip you.

Reviews deserve a separate mention. Yelp and Google reviews are the raw material AI engines summarize when they describe you, so a handful of recent, specific reviews that name your services does more work than a hundred vague ones. You cannot script that, but you can ask happy customers to mention what they came in for.

None of this is exotic. The unglamorous part is the consistency, and that is where most small sites fall down.

The honest part: nobody can promise a ChatGPT recommendation. Answers vary by prompt, by city, and by day. What you control is whether your site and listings are readable, consistent, and easy to quote.

Can I check whether ChatGPT recommends my business?

Yes, by testing it. Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, such as "best plumber in [your city]", in a fresh chat, and note which businesses appear and which sources it cites. Repeat weekly, because answers shift. A single run proves very little.

The site-side checks are faster. GeoRoar's free audit fetches your public pages and scores crawler access, structured data, answerability, and off-site signals on a fixed 100-point rubric, in about 30 seconds. If you want the corrected files generated for you, that is the $99 Fix Pack (one-time). Monitor is $19/month if you want to keep watching as your site changes.
