If you've been pricing out Profound, you've probably noticed two things: the numbers climb fast, and the product tells you where you stand without telling you what to change. Here's what Profound is actually built for, and where a different kind of tool fits better.
What does Profound actually do?
Profound is an enterprise AI visibility platform. It tracks how often your brand shows up in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews, then reports on citation rates and how you compare to competitors. Self-serve plans run from $99 a month for a ChatGPT-only, 50-prompt tier up to $399 a month for three answer engines and 100 prompts. Enterprise deployments with more platforms, seats, and API access run from roughly $2,000 to $5,000 or more a month, according to a 2026 pricing breakdown from Trakkr.
Where does Profound stop short?
Profound sits on the "read" side of the problem. It watches and reports. Several 2026 reviews of the category, including comparisons from AirOps and ZeroRank, make the same point in different words: Profound shows you where you're invisible in AI search, but the work of fixing that invisibility, rewriting pages, adding schema, opening up crawler access, still lands on your team or an agency. For a company with the budget and the staff to act on a dashboard, that division of labor is fine. For a smaller business, it means paying a subscription for a diagnosis and then still needing someone to write the prescription.
Is Profound worth it for a small business?
Usually not by itself. A local dental practice or a five-person agency doesn't need a prompt-tracking dashboard with seat limits and SSO. What that business needs is a plain answer to "what's actually wrong with my site" and a way to fix it without hiring a developer. That's a different job than Profound was built to do, and it's fine for a tool to be built for a different job. The mismatch only hurts when a small business buys Profound expecting fixes and gets a scorecard instead.
What's a good alternative to Profound?
It depends on what you actually need next:
- If you need ongoing, enterprise-scale tracking across many markets, prompts, and AI engines with a team to act on the findings, Profound or a peer like Scrunch AI or Otterly AI is a reasonable fit. That's genuinely their strength.
- If you need to know what's broken and get it fixed without a five-figure annual contract, a fix-first audit tool is the more direct route. GeoRoar runs a free 100-point audit across crawler access, structured data, answerability, entity clarity, trust, and off-site presence, then generates the actual fixes (robots.txt, llms.txt, schema, rewritten copy) for a one-time $99. If you want someone to also implement them for you, that's $999. If you want your score watched over time after that, Monitor runs $19 a month, a fraction of even Profound's cheapest tier.
How do I find out where my site actually stands?
Skip the guessing. Run a free GeoRoar audit and you'll get a score out of 100 against the same six categories AI engines actually check, in about 30 seconds, no account required. If the fixes turn out to be more than you want to do yourself, that's what the Fix Pack and Done-for-you plan are for.
