AI citation share sounds like a metric that needs an expensive dashboard. It is a simple ratio. The hard part is that AI answers change every time you ask, so one check tells you almost nothing, and most "visibility scores" skip over that.
What is AI citation share?
AI citation share is the percentage of sampled AI answers that link to your site as a source, out of all the answers you tested for a set of questions. Share of answer is the looser version: how often your brand is named at all, linked or not. Pick one, state the denominator, and measure it the same way each time.
The idea borrows from "share of voice" in advertising, where a brand's portion of the conversation is measured against competitors. Here the conversation is an AI answer. The two numbers can diverge a lot. A brand can be named in 40% of answers and linked in 5%, and a single blended score hides that gap. We cover the difference in AI mention vs citation.
How do you calculate it?
Write 20 to 50 questions your customers actually ask. Run each one several times on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Count the answers that cite your domain and divide by the total number of answers. Cited in 12 of 80 answers means a 15% citation share. Repeat the count for your brand name alone to get share of answer.
Keep a log with the date, engine, location, and exact wording of each prompt. Without that, next month's number is not comparable to this month's. For a dental practice, the question list might include "best dentist in [your city]", "emergency dentist open Saturday", and "how much does Invisalign cost". Use real phrasing from your calls and reviews, not marketing language.
Why does a single check tell you almost nothing?
Because AI answers are not stable. Rand Fishkin of SparkToro and Patrick O'Donnell of Gumshoe.ai had 600 volunteers run 12 identical prompts through ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI nearly 3,000 times. The odds of getting the same brand list twice were under 1 in 100. The same list in the same order was closer to 1 in 1,000.
The findings are reported by Search Engine Land. The authors concluded that ranking position in an AI list is effectively meaningless, and that the useful number is visibility percentage: how often a brand shows up across many runs. Some brands appeared in 60% to 90% of responses for a given intent. That is the same idea as citation share, measured over repeats.
So if a tool shows you "you ranked #2 in ChatGPT today", treat it as one draw from a shuffled deck. Ask the same question ten times and look at the rate.
Which should you track, citations or mentions?
Track both, and report them separately. A citation sends a reader to your page and tells you which of your pages the engine trusts. A mention without a link still plants your name, which matters most for local businesses where people call or walk in without clicking anything.
If you must pick one for a small business, pick mentions on local-intent questions, because that is where a customer decides who to contact. If you publish guides and want traffic, pick citations. Either way, compare engines on their own rather than averaging them, since each one pulls from different sources.
Is there a free way to see real citation data?
Partly. Bing added a Citation Share view to its AI Performance report in Webmaster Tools in June 2026, covering Copilot and Bing's AI answers (Bing blog). It is first-party data, and it is free. Our walkthrough is in how to check Copilot and ChatGPT citations in Bing Webmaster Tools.
Google Search Console now has a generative AI report as well, but it shows impressions and pages only, with no clicks or queries yet. Useful, but it is not a citation share. For ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity you still have to sample prompts yourself or pay a tracker.
Does a higher citation share mean more customers?
Not automatically. Pew Research Center found people clicked a result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it did not (Pew). Being cited does not guarantee a click, and being absent does not guarantee you lose the sale.
Treat citation share as a leading indicator, the way you would treat impressions. Pair it with calls, bookings, and form fills so you can tell whether it moves anything real. If the number climbs and the phone stays quiet, your questions are probably the wrong ones.
What actually moves the number?
Measuring is the easy half. Citation share goes up when AI crawlers can reach your site, your pages answer questions in a direct paragraph with a source behind each claim, your schema says what you are, and other sites mention you. Those are the things a GeoRoar audit scores on a fixed 100-point rubric, with every pass and fail listed.
