Perplexity works differently than ChatGPT, and treating them as the same target is why some sites show up in one and not the other. Here's what actually moves the needle for Perplexity, not AI search in general.
What makes Perplexity different from ChatGPT and Google?
Perplexity is built as a live retrieval engine. It fetches current pages for nearly every question instead of leaning on stored training data, and it typically pulls in around ten candidate pages before narrowing them down to the three to five it actually names in an answer.
That narrowing step is the one that matters. Google ranks a list and lets you click through. ChatGPT often blends stored knowledge with a search pass. Perplexity searches almost every time, reads a shortlist of pages in full, and picks who gets quoted. Being "technically indexed" somewhere does not help you if your page never makes that shortlist.
Is PerplexityBot actually allowed to crawl your site?
Check your robots.txt for a line that names PerplexityBot specifically. If your site blocks it, or if a catch-all "Disallow: /" rule catches it by accident, Perplexity cannot read your pages at all, and no amount of good writing fixes that.
There are two separate Perplexity agents, and they behave differently. PerplexityBot is the crawler that indexes pages ahead of time and is expected to respect robots.txt. Perplexity-User is a different agent that fetches pages live when someone asks a question. Perplexity has described it as acting on behalf of a person rather than crawling at scale, which is part of why it does not always follow the same rules. If you want to be thorough, check your server logs for both user agents instead of assuming one setting covers you.
What content does Perplexity actually cite?
Specific answers with real numbers, named entities, and dates beat vague marketing copy. A March 2026 analysis of 30 million AI citations by Peec AI, reported by Search Engine Land, found Perplexity leans especially hard on Reddit, LinkedIn, and G2 for business-related queries, more than ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode do.
Most GEO advice skips this part: your own site is not the only surface that matters. If your business has no presence on the platforms Perplexity already trusts, like a company LinkedIn page with recent activity or a mentioned thread on Reddit, you are competing with one hand behind your back. Owning strong content on your own domain still matters. It just isn't sufficient by itself.
Does structured data help with Perplexity specifically?
Yes, but it plays a supporting role. Valid schema, like LocalBusiness, Product, or FAQPage markup, removes ambiguity about what a page actually is. That matters when Perplexity is choosing between several pages that all cover the same topic and needs a fast way to tell a dentist's site from a dental supply blog.
Schema will not rescue a page that buries its answer three paragraphs deep or never actually answers the question. Think of it as a tiebreaker, not a strategy on its own.
How do I check whether Perplexity is already citing me?
Ask it the questions your customers would actually type, something like "best [your category] in [your city]" or "who does [what you do] near me." Run it a few times, since answers vary, and note who gets named. If it's never you, the fix usually starts with crawler access. Content structure is the next thing to check, and off-site presence after that.
What should a local or service business fix first?
Start with the boring stuff. Confirm PerplexityBot and the other major AI crawlers can reach your site, add FAQ-style structured data for the questions people actually ask you, and make sure your Google Business Profile and directory listings agree with each other on your name, address, and hours. Off-site consistency counts for more with Perplexity than most businesses assume, because it treats third-party corroboration as a trust signal rather than an afterthought.
GeoRoar's free audit checks all of this at once, including whether PerplexityBot, GPTBot, and ClaudeBot can actually reach your pages, and hands back a score in about 30 seconds without a sign-up. If you want the fixes generated for you, the Fix Pack is a one-time $99. If you want your score watched as your site changes, Monitor is $19 a month. If you would rather hand the whole thing off, Done-for-You is $999.
