You typed your own business into ChatGPT and got a shrug, a competitor's name, or an answer that skipped you entirely. That's frustrating, but it's rarely random. It's almost always one of three fixable problems, and you can check which one applies to you in a few minutes.
Why isn't my site showing up in ChatGPT?
Most of the time it comes down to one of three things: ChatGPT's crawlers can't actually reach your pages, your content isn't written in a way an engine can lift and quote, or nothing on your site clearly tells ChatGPT what your business does and where. Each has a different fix, so the first job is figuring out which one is yours.
It's rarely "ChatGPT doesn't know local businesses exist." It's usually something specific and checkable, sitting in a robots.txt file, a JavaScript-only homepage, or a missing schema tag.
Is ChatGPT even allowed to read my site?
OpenAI runs more than one crawler, and mixing them up is the single most common mistake we see. GPTBot fetches pages to train future models. OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are separate crawlers that fetch pages live, when someone actually asks ChatGPT a question. Blocking the wrong one, or blocking all of them at once through an SEO plugin's "block AI bots" toggle, is a quiet way to disappear.
Check your robots.txt directly (yoursite.com/robots.txt) and look for a Disallow: /
under any of those three user-agents. If it's there and you didn't mean to add it, that alone can
explain the silence.
Does blocking GPTBot actually stop ChatGPT from citing you?
More directly than a lot of site owners expect. A July 2026 study by cloro cross-referenced robots.txt rules against real ChatGPT citation data across 1,058 prominent domains. Sites that block GPTBot had a median ChatGPT citation propensity of 0.003 citations per Google ranking they hold, against 0.417 for sites that allow it, a gap that lines up almost exactly with which provider's crawler got blocked (source).
The same research found publishers are already drawing a line between the two jobs: they block training crawlers like GPTBot and CCBot at roughly 14 to 18%, but block the live-retrieval bots, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, at only 3 to 6%. In other words, a lot of sites have figured out how to say "don't train on me" without also saying "don't cite me." If your robots.txt treats every AI bot the same way, you're leaving citations on the table you don't need to.
Is your content built in a way ChatGPT can quote?
Even a fully crawlable site gets skipped if there's nothing quotable on the page. AI engines pull short, self-contained answers, not paragraphs that build up to a point after three sentences of throat-clearing. If your core content only appears once JavaScript finishes rendering, several AI crawlers never see it at all, since they don't reliably execute client-side scripts the way a browser does.
The fix is plain text, not clever engineering: put a direct answer near the top of each section, keep it in the initial HTML, and write it the way a person would actually ask the question.
Is your business identity clear enough for ChatGPT to trust?
This is where structured data earns its keep. Schema markup that names you specifically, a
Dentist, a Restaurant, a LegalService, gives the engine a
clean, machine-readable signal about what you are and where you operate. A generic or missing
Organization tag leaves ChatGPT guessing, and engines tend to skip businesses they
can't confidently categorize rather than take the risk of citing the wrong one.
How do you check where your site actually stands?
Guessing which of these three problems you have wastes time you don't need to spend. GeoRoar runs a free audit that checks your robots.txt against the real OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity crawler names, scans your pages for structured data and answerable content, and scores the result against a fixed 100-point rubric. You get the exact checks you pass and fail in about 30 seconds. If you want the fixes generated for you instead of a to-do list, that's the $99 Fix Pack.
